These are difficult times. We thank you for the support and concern we have already received from so many of you.

As you are aware, early last Saturday morning, Hamas carried out an unusually brutal and violent attack primarily against civilians, within Israel. While the leadership of some academic institutions has issued public condemnations, we learned that in others this has been regarded as just “one more event” in the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, which can be understood from multiple perspectives.

We would like to emphasize that this is far from the truth. This was an act of singular barbaric violence which must be thoroughly renounced. To show why this is so, we will need to share some truly disturbing details, as referred to in President Biden’s speech and now coming to light in the international press. We know that these will disturb you no less than they have shaken us.

On the Sabbath and Sukkoth holiday and 50 years almost to the day after the fateful Yom Kippur War, Hamas unleashed a surprise rocket attack on Israel from Gaza, reaching as far north as the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem areas, while simultaneously Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants breached the border and brutally massacred those in the communities just across the border inside Israel – women, elderly, children, young families. Kids attending a music festival, peace activists, elderly people in their 80’s, toddlers. Hundreds. Many were slaughtered on the spot, others huddled in their homes for hours before being found and killed or were held hostage in their homes or communities under constant threat of death, while still others were taken captive and brought into Gaza. Horrific videos posted by Hamas from Gaza show the parading of injured hostages in the street to great cheering, show cruelty to children, taunting of the elderly, show rape and torture.

All this as hundreds of Israelis were injured or killed by indiscriminate rocket fire, which has hit both Jewish towns and Bedouin and Arab villages. Just two days ago, a mosque in the village of Abu Ghosh was hit by rocket fire.

Let’s be clear. This is not “war as usual” or just another chapter in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There are not “good people on both sides”. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have proven themselves to be cruel, barbaric organizations reminiscent of the Taliban and the Islamic State.

We have heard of initiatives undertaken by faculty and students on some campuses in countries outside of Israel to support Hamas and Islamic Jihad actions, and we understand that there has not always been a clear response from academic leadership to such signs of support. We hope that you will agree with us that there can be no support for such terror organizations in Western democratic societies, just like there is no support for Al Qaeda or the Islamic State. There can be no support for purposeful massacres of civilian populations, or for the taking civilian hostages.

As the guardians of higher education and academia, actively pursuing knowledge for the benefit of humanity, as role models for and teachers of the leadership of tomorrow, we all share the responsibility to educate our communities.

What values are we passing on? Freedom of speech and academic freedom, absolutely. But a stand against barbaric violence perpetrated on civilian populations? We know you join us in renouncing such acts of violence.

Wij zijn geschokt door de terroristische aanval van Hamas op Israël op 7 oktober en de oorlogssituatie die daardoor is ontstaan.

Onze hoop is dat iedereen die vrienden en familieleden in het conflictgebied heeft, contact met ze heeft en weet dat zij veilig zijn.

Wij wensen alle betrokkenen veel kracht toe.

Op zondag 3 september vond onder veel belangstelling in de Uilenburgersjoel de tweede Harry van den Bergh lezing plaats. We kijken terug op een zeer geslaagde middag. Professor Barak Medina, hoogleraar mensenrechten aan de rechtenfaculteit van de Hebrew University in Jeruzalem, sprak zeer veel mensen aan met zijn verhaal over de ontwikkelingen in de Israëlische rechtstaat en de gevolgen voor burgers en de academische wereld.

Door de schematische opbouw: 1947/48- 1992 en de situatie nu, werd duidelijk dat de kernvraag in het conflict is: wat betekent een ‘Joodse staat’.

Door het aansluitende interview van journaliste en publiciste Ronit Palache met Barak Medina werd nog beter invoelbaar wat de voorstellen van de regering concreet betekenen voor het dagelijkse leven van mensen in Israel.

Vanuit de zaal werden interessante vragen gesteld, zoals die over de spanning tussen Asjkenazische en Sefardische bevolkingsgroepen in Israel.

Een leerzame middag met veel stof tot nadenken en ook een sprankje hoop.

Op zondag 11 december vond de eerste Harry van den Bergh-lezing plaats bij Brouwerij de Engel in Amsterdam. Harry van den Bergh z”l was jarenlang bevlogen voorzitter van de NVHU. Hij overleed op 20 maart 2020. Het bestuur gedenkt hem met een jaarlijks terugkerende lezing.

Het was een memorabele middag met bijzondere bijdragen van de sprekers. Daniël van den Bergh (zoon van Harry van den Bergh), Birgitta Tazelaar (plaatsvervangend directeur-generaal Internationale Organisaties van het Nederlandse Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken) en Bert Koenders (hoogleraar Vrede, Recht en Veiligheid aan de Universiteit Leiden, voormalig Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken) haalden herinneringen op aan hun relatie met Harry en deelden elk hun persoonlijke anekdotes met het publiek.

Keynote speaker was professor Mona Khoury-Kassabri, vicevoorzitter van de Hebreeuwse Universiteit in Jeruzalem. Zij is tevens adviseur op het gebied van minderheden en hoofd van de commissie die zich bezighoudt met de toegang tot hoger onderwijs voor Arabische studenten in Israël. Zij vertelde over het beleid dat erop gericht is de universiteit diverser en inclusiever te maken en de uitdagingen die daarmee gepaard gaan. De middag werd afgesloten met een gezellige borrel.

Prof. Edwin Seroussi and his team are looking for contributions for the establishment of a solid fund, which allows the hiring of young reseachers who will continue his lifelong work. The aim of this fund is to create a part time permanent position of a senior researcher who will continue guiding the research projects and the editing of publications.

Heidy Zimmermann has been a member of the research staff and curator at the Paul Sacher Foundation since 2002. She studied musicology, German language and literature, as well as Jewish studies (PhD on Tora und Shira, 2000). She has published numerous articles and co-edited books on aspects of Jewish music and twentieth-century music.

Hoe worden de levens en posities van vrouwen in de ultraorthodoxe gemeenschap beïnvloed door de economische verhoudingen van vrouwen en mannen in deze gemeenschap?

In Israel is nu iets meer dan een tiende van de bevolking ultraorthodox (charedisch) en de gemeenschap groeit sterk. Veel mannen in deze gesloten gemeenschap werken niet, maar zijn afhankelijk van bijstand van de overheid terwijl zij religie studeren. De armoede en de populatiegroei in deze gemeenschap zorgen ervoor dat ook steeds vaker vrouwen moeten werken om de kost voor het gezin te verdienen. Omdat er een tekort aan banen is binnen de gemeenschap zijn vrouwen gedwongen deze werkomgeving buiten de religieuze gemeenschap in de seculiere wereld te zoeken. De religieuze leiders van de gemeenschap leggen de vrouwen in deze werksituatie strikte regels op, bijvoorbeeld met betrekking tot gedrag en kleding. Ondanks de grote economische bijdrage die deze vrouwen leveren, is het spanningsveld tussen het leven in de gemeenschap en het werken buiten de gemeenschap groot.

Michal Frenkel is hoofd van het departement van sociologie en antropologie aan de Hebreeuwse Universiteit van Jeruzalem. Zij heeft veel onderzoek gedaan naar het onderwerp gender en religie.

In dit webinar bespreekt zij hoe de ultraorthodoxe vrouwen integreren in de beroepsbevolking en academische studie en hoe hun ervaringen in de seculiere wereld hun levensbeschouwing en identiteit uitdagen. Zij zal ook spreken over hun (feministische) poging hun eigen gemeenschap te transformeren en te onderhandelen met patriarchie.
